Can I change my Computer Science username?

[effective 7.8.04]

We do not currently have a system to support users changing their own username. Because of this, all changes to usernames must be made manually by the Computer Support Group, and hence must be justified. All users may request a username change by submitting a task through the CSG Task Page.

At this time all student (undergraduate or graduate), requests for username changes are evaluated on a case by case basis.

To request a username change, please submit a task listing your desired username and the reason(s) you need to have it changed.

A web based system for automating username changes is under development and is scheduled to be in place as soon as possible.

My ID card does not let me into the labs, help!

We have installed new card readers on all of the open access labs (220, 219, 214, 209). The new card swipes will read both the old and the new TAMU ID cards.

If you have a new ID card and it does not work, it is possible that we do not have your new card in our database. In order to add your new card to our database, you need to come by the CS Helpdesk (HRBB 210) sometime Monday through Friday between 9am and 5pm.

    * Note: The ID card database is updated at the beginning of each semester when we receive the student registration data from TAMU. If you receive an Aggie card in-between semesters, it is possible we will not have your new card in our system. The new Aggie cards have a random, unique number (not your SSN, UIN or card ID) encoded on their magnetic stripe. This unique number is not printed anywhere on the card. If we do not receive your new card data from TAMU at the beginning of the semester, we have to swipe your card to read the new number and update our system manually.

If your card used to work but does not now, then most likely your card is just expired. Please submit a task email the helpdesk if your card stops working.

Please remember that you can have your accounts suspended if you try to get in the labs without using your ID card.

Can I connect to the CS Wireless Network with my laptop?

Brief answer:

Yes, connecting to the wireless network in the H.R. Bright building is no different than connecting to other campus wireless access points. You will need to connect to the TAMU VPN to gain access.

What to do next:

Download the CISCO VPN Client by following the instructions in Wireless Network Connections.
If you need access to the network or any systems in the Computer Science Department, you can connect to the C.S. VPN server (vpn.cs.tamu.edu) Students may connect using either the Cisco VPN client or the Windows VPN client. The configuration is the same as connecting to the campus vpn. Your CPSC Windows username and password are used for authentication. More detailed instructions can be found at http://helpdesk.cs.tamu.edu/docs/vpn
