File Transfer Clients

Communication methods for Computer Science servers are upgraded to secure SSH, so the continued use of insecure protocols such as classic Telnet and FTP is discouraged (in fact, it won't work). However, there are several secure ways to transfer files back and forth from your Computer Science home drive.

• For Unix/Linux:
  • Command-line utilities such as scp and sftp are presently your best bet for file transfer.
• For Windows
  • PuTTY is a collection of utilities that, in addition to providing a very nice ssh telnet client, also provides command-line Windows versions of the scp and sftp utilities that mirror their Unix counterparts. Download it here.
  • F-Secure offers a shareware SFTP/Secure Telnet client which is currently installed on the Computer Science lab computers. A guide to using F-Secure can be found here
  • A very good graphical freeware program for SSH file transfer is WinSCP. It is used almost exactly the same as a regular FTP/SFTP client. (scp and sftp differ in their usage when used from the command-line, but when used via a graphical client, they are virtually indistinguishable). Instructions can be found here.
• For Mac OS X
  • We haven't tested the RBrowser SSH suite, but it seems promising. Download it here.
  • PuTTY is currently developing a port for the Mac OS.
