Sending Email From Off-Campus

This How-To covers how to send mail while off campus, from your home or while you are away travelling. The Computer Science department email server's (mail.cs.tamu.edu) are configured to only accept connections for out bound email from computers with in the cs.tamu.edu domain. You will be able to receive mail from mail.cs.tamu.edu but will receive an error message "Relaying denied" when attempting to send email. The email servers are configured this way to prevent people from out side the department abusing our email servers (such as spammers!). To get around this restriction you need to use the Computer Science Department VPN and set your outgoing SMTP server to smtp.cs.tamu.edu.
