Block Spam E-mail - Using Outlook
Block Spam E-mail - Using Outlook
The university system automatically flags junk mail. You can use this flag to
keep those messages from even coming to your inbox.
- Open Outlook
- Select Tools from the menu
- Select Rules Wizard
Figure 1.
- Click NEW
Figure 2.
- Choose "Check messages when they arrive" from the options and click next
Figure 3.
- Choose "with specific words in the message header"
Figure 4.
- Under Rule Description the words "specific words" are underlined, click on these.
- What you will do next depends on the degree of control you want over your mail filtering:
- For simple spam filtering, type
Gauge in the pop up box. Click next.
- For more exact filtering, you can explicitly set Outlook to delete messages which have a certain
probability of being junk mail. If you look at the actual header put on junk mail, it is something
similar to the following:
X-Perlmx-Spam: Gauge=XXXXXXII, Probability=62%, ...
The "Gauge" number and the probability numbers are the same, showing the probability that the mail is spam.
However, note that the gauge number is put with an X for each probability level of 10. That means, if
you want just to delete messages with 90% or greater probability of being spam, you can search
for the word Gauge=XXXXXXXXX instead of simply for the word
Gauge.
Figure 5.
- In the next box you can choose what you want to do with these messages, the
most popular choice is 'delete it'. Click next.
Figure 6.
- Another choice is to move the Spam Mail to another folder.
Figure 7.
If you don't already have a Spam Mail folder, click new.
Figure 8.
Whatever folder is highlighted in the bottom window is where the folder will be created.
Figure 9.
Click ok.
- The next screen is an optional exception. (You don't have to choose one.) Click next.
- Type a name for the rule: Ex: Spam Filter. Click Finish.
