Setting Up Your Computer Science and Engineering Email Account

This help document shows you how to configure Mozilla Thunderbird, a free email client, for your Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) email account.  You can use these same server settings to configure other email clients.

Graduate Students, Faculty, and Staff have Computer Science and Engineering email accounts.  Undergraduate students do not.  Their username@cse.tamu.edu email is automatically forwarded to their officical TAMU email address. 


Configuring Thunderbird For Your Computer Science and Engineering Email Account

The first time you run Thunderbird, the "Account Wizzard" should start up atomatically. If the wizzard does not start, you can access it by going to Tools >> Account Settings in the main Thunderbird menu bar. Then, click the Add Account... button.

     Click Next >

2.  Figure 2: Identity     

     Enter the name you would like to appear in the From field for your outgoing messages.

     Enter yourCSEusername@cs.tamu.edu where yourCSEusername is the user name you use to log on to Computer Science and Engineering computers.

     Click Next >

3.  Figure 3: Server Information 

     Select IMAP at the top of this screen.

     Incoming Server: mail.cse.tamu.edu

     Outgoing Server: smtp.cse.tamu.edu

          * Note:  You will make further modifications to the outgoing server once you have completed the Account Wizard.

     If you plan on using Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) email from outside the CSE Firewall, you will need to connect to the CSE VPN.

     Click Next >

4.  Figure 4: User Names

     Enter your Computer Science and Engineering User Name for both the Incoming and Outgoing User Name.

     Click Next >

5.  Figure 5: Account Name

     You can leave the Account Name as your email address or change it to anything you find easily identifiable.  (Ex: CS Email)

     Click Next >

6.  Figure 6: Account Summary

     This final screen shows a summary of the information you have entered. 

     If you want to change any of the settings click < Back.  If you are happy with the settings click Finish.

     Go to Tools >> Account Settings on the main Thunderbird menu bar.

     Click on you CSE Account in the middle of the screen and then click on Edit...

     Change the Port to 465.

     Make sure Use name and password is Checked.

     Select SSL.

     Click OK to clear out of all open dialoges to return to your mailbox.

'10.  When prompted use your 'Computer Science and Engineering Password. 

       Remember, if you plan on using Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) email from outside the CSE Firewall, you will need to connect to the CSE VPN.
